Human Computer Interaction

New paradigms are valuated to improve human input abilities and Apple is particularly aware of this potential.

About this topic I would like to introduce Optimus Tactus keyboard, a kind of customizable input device based on technology similar to the one on the iPhone screen.

At the moment this keyboard is only a concept, but technologies are available to implement it.

The only doubt is about feedback: in fact a keyboard like this is not able to supply a physical feedback, but audio or lighting responses are possible.

So are people and market ready to make this big step?

After new functionality introduced by Macbook Air, Apple would improve human-computer interaction by advancing the track-pad capabilities.

On MacRumors you can find some pics that describes pad gestures aimed to create a more advanced style of interaction with different applications.

Is this the first step for the end of mouse input device?

MILK was the first project where I covered the role of interaction designer.

I worked for the Department of Informatics, Systems and Communication (DISCo) and cooperated in a close way with Domus Academy, Xerox Research Center and Fraunhofer Institute.

From the guidelines implemented by Domus Academy I created a set of user interaction aimed to implement the functionalities of a Flash based interface.

MILK (IST 2001-33165) is an international research project in the IST Programme. MILK goal is to create a solution supporting knowledge and working processes in knowledge intensive organizations.

MILK embraces the internet-enabled possibilities to access knowledge “anywhere and anytime”, according to the business needs of organizations working in the internet economy. MILK is an integrated and comprehensive knowledge management solution which supports working in a number of situations by providing three access environments.

MILK is willing to support the current working place scenario where knowledge workers dynamically change between different working situations; they work in front of their PC in the office, they work with others in formal and informal groups often with little opportunity to have face-to-face meetings, they work frequently outside the office when travelling, or at a client’s site having only their mobile equipment with them.

MILK will leverage on the results of the Klee&Co project (Knowledge & Learning Environments for European & Creative Organizations – ESPRIT Project 28842 – 1999-2000). The output of Klee&Co was an innovative prototype of a knowledge management technical and organisational solution, based on the “view with context”, where objects could be visualised in their context (related documents, related links, related subject matter experts, related communication and e-mails).

MILK partners are: Irso, Butera e Partners, DA Research, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Orbiteam Software, picturesafe, University of Milan-Bicocca, Xerox Research Center Europe, Xerox Global Services.
