Finally the multi-thesaurus tool, a project in collaboration with FAO, BGS and BNCF, has a new name, Ponto, and a logo.

Pontus was part of the old-Greek mythology. Son of Gaia, he was the god of the Mediterranean Sea and the personification of the road connecting all the nations on this Sea.

Since Pontus means connections, we found appropriate to use his Italian name Ponto – rounder than English – as metaphor of the mapping among different controlled vocabularies.

I was in Florence on Wednesday for a start-up meeting, which regards a multi-thesaurus management system.

The project should be the continuation of the Thesaurus Tool Code, where JRC, FAO and BGS equally contributed to the development.

The team will be larger, thanks to the introduction of BNCF as users.

Good news will follow soon, I hope.

I’m involved in a knowledge management project for the Joint Research Centre, European Commission.

One aim of the project is to redesign the thesauri management system realized by FAO for a second edition of this open-source software.

At the moment the project is carried out by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission and British Geological Survey (BGS).

The FAO has published a news about the project that is partially available in the Assembla web site.
